Double page spread interview

When did you first select individuals for the band?
Jack: A year ago today.
Craig: 31st of October was our first gig.
Tonight’s your first headline gig, are you excited?
Jack: Yeah we are. Well I am anyway.
Craig: Yeah yeah as we were saying before, we played our first proper gig here (The Picket) so it’s nice to come back and headline tonight.
Was there any bands before this exactly formed?
Craig: Yes, we were called ‘Grass in the attic’.
What’s different about this band?
Craig: A ginger person isn’t in it.
Jack: It's not that we're discriminating, he was just a wanker
Who’s new in this band?
Cameron: It was these four and then I joined the charade so I’m relatively new.
What made you change?
Jack: We had arguments about it and we had a gig coming up and we thought ‘We’ll go and do another band then won’t we’
Who’s your inspiration as a band?
Craig: Hmm let me have a think about this. *sarcastic tone*
Jack: Arctic monkeys! They’re the biggest one anyway.
Who thought of the name ‘Fools on parade’?
Jack: Craig
Craig: I did, it was a joke for a while weren’t it.
Jack: Yeah it was a joke, we didn’t have a name for a while and as a pisstake Craig said ‘Fools on parade’ and we kept it.
What band do you hate most in the entire world?
Craig: Solitary Confinements! And Guardians, I hate Guardians.
John: Hate Guardians, love Hippies on the Hill
Jack: They’re both shit. I also hate erm, Beady Eye!
John: No. Don’t say that.
Megan Fox or Cheryl Cole?
Craig: Ooooooo
All: Megan Fox!!
Jack: Cheryl Cole’s too fake
Who would you most like to collaborate with, anyone you want?
Jack: The Courteeners
John: And Arctic Monkeys!
Do you think you’re gonna make it, truthfully?
Craig: It’s been said.
*All laugh*
Jack: We’ve been told we will but it’s quite hard to get into music like.
Craig: It’s a long way to go
Cameron: If you want to rock and roll.
*All laugh*
Hmm, don’t think we have any other questions?
Jack: Who’s the best looking? Jack?
*All laugh*
Last question, do you love eachother genuinely?
Craig: We do, let’s have a group hug to end the session!

Planning production

After deciding on the content for a music magazine, decisions must be made of how it will look visually and so here are the pictures my magazine will include:

My front cover will consist of one main image, this will be of an Indie artist.
I may potentially use some small images around the main image, based on the articles which most stand out.

My double page spread will have an image of the band the article is based on- Fools on parade. There will be one main image bleeding across the page of the band.

My contents page will have images of 2011's v festival performances and images of the gig the double page spread is based on.

Publication Plan

After conducting all my research, I am able to make final decisions for my magazine.

Title of magazine: I-Music

Positioning Statement: 'Listening the independant way'
Frequency of publication: My magazine will be published monthly as my research shows that that is the most popular frequency. The answers in my questionnaire supported this.
Distribution: Newsagents, supermarkets and music shops (e.g HMV)

Price: £2.99

Style: The style will be informal as this is typical of music magazines, as proven throughout my research.

Rationale: My magazine is for the public, it will be aimed at the age range of 16 onwards. It will be more specifically aimed at those interested in Indie music, especially those who attend gigs and festivals frequently.

Regular content:
-Editors letter

-Fans forum
-Competitions

Questionnaire results.

To gather a better idea of what I may need to include in my magazine, I issued 20 questionnaires to a varying audience concerning Indie music and in general, music magazines. The answers to the questions will give me an insight into what genres of music Indie fans like other than their usual style, which age and gender more frequently purchase music magazines, bands and artists the audience would like to read about and a possible name for my magazine may be achievable within the answers to the question, 'Which three words do you associate with the genre of Indie'

After receiving the information I required to be able to make a successful magazine, I put it into pie charts so it was easier to make out the more popular answer for each question. Here are my results:

When looking at the pie charts it is clear to see that the most popular purchases are either weekly or monthly. The monthly segment is slightly larger and so evidently, monthly magazines are more successful within my genre. Also, the age group that are more fond of Indie music magazines appear to be those of 16-20 by a rather significant amount.

This pie chart was formed from a question of which the audience had a variety of answers they could choose. Quite rightfully, as the audience were those interested in Indie music, Indie was the genre that had the more dominant section of the pie chart. Getting an insight in to what sort of music Indie fans appreciate when accompanied with Indie is quite useful however as it could possibly be used within the music magazine.

Question five was 'Who is your favourite artist/band associated with Indie music'. This was open to any answer the audience chose. Five out of twenty of the audience chose 'Arctic Monkeys' as their favourite band. Four chose 'The Wombats'. Three chose 'Kings of Leon'. Three chose 'Mumford and Sons'. Two chose 'Florence and the machine' and two also chose 'Coldplay'. One member of the audience chose 'The Smiths'.

Kerrang and NME magazine

Kerrang, the worlds largest weekly music magazine falls into the range of magazines I will be closely analysing in an attempt to make a similair magazine. Magazines like 'Kerrang!', 'NME' and 'Mojo' will act as templates and guides whilst I'm making my own music magazine. Below is a link that gives statistics of which gender and age group mostly reads Kerrang. This helps in giving information of what type of audience my magazine will also need to appeal to. It also gives a mission statement telling of their role as not only educators of the young in the older music department but also the introducing of new bands within the magazine.

Above is a link to NME's media pack. It offers information on the key statistics of NME's audience, specific amounts of categories that buy the magazine and a collection of their personal opinions on the magazine. It also tells of its mechanical date and production.

Conclusion of preliminary task.

After producing a rough version of my front cover, it came to my attention that it deviated more codes and conventiones than it actually followed. Due to only spending a small fraction of time on this piece, I decided that rather than having a cluttered front cover I could quickly alter it by having one large image and the font in a clear colour over the image. When doing this, I would need to find a way to maintain the conventions I'd followed, such as; a barcode, a title that stands out, one main image linked to a main story and headlines in different fonts to the descriptions of the stories. I would contrastingly have to improve my magazine by adding things such as a date, issue number and possibly a website address at which the audience could receive further information and stories due to feature within future issues of the magazine. My contents page looks slightly different to my front cover, the reason for this being the realisation that I hadn't actually followed as many codes and conventions as I shoud have when making the front cover. Like many professional contents pages, it follows the convention of 'regulars' and 'features' sections. This guides the audience into what they would usually be purchasing regularly from the magazine and what special additions are included in the particular week that they have purchased it. It has a variety of pictures that relate to storylines. It does reinforce the main storyline but not obviously because a different picture has been chosen to link with that storyline on the contents page. Like the majority of magazines also, my contents page has a different colour page number, to the story it is linked to. The front used in my contents page is within the correct range usually used. To improve my contents page, I would use a main image or possibly an editors letter. Instead of using a main image, I simply used a collection of small ones, this means there is no main attraction for the audience when looking at my contents page, nothng stands out as much more exciting than the things its surrounded by.

Initial ideas

In advance of making our music magazines, detailed research is a crutial aspect of our work and in figuring out what to do and so after conducting that research, initial ideas were formed. For my individual magazine, I decided the genre would be more specifically Indie than anything. This follows ideas of magazines such as 'Q', it's sister magazine 'Mojo' and 'NME'. Using these as guides, I intend to model my magazine in the unique way that they also do. The target audience for these magazines is genders in general mainly within the age group of 16-24. Indie fans obviously make the most frequent purchases. Taking this into account, my magazine will be aimed towards that target audience in a way that will help them to engage in the magazine.

The layout would generally be similair to the magazines provided within this blog. The images used would all be original, taken by myself. The main band included will have also been interviewed exclusively by myself, the likeliness is that this band will be local.

Photographs for the school magazine

In advance of making our magazines, we dedicated a lesson to taking the shots that would be included in the magazine. Before doing so, we drew up what we ideally wanted our magazines to look like and the stories that they would consist of. This helped us create an idea of what sort of pictures we would need to take, those that linked in with our storylines.

This will be the main image on the front page due to it being the main storyline. 'Exclusive interview with Robynn Middlemiss' in which advice and a success story will be given based upon GCSE results.

Links in with the 'All about the Arts' storyline.

Used on the front cover, this gives an idea of what types of books will be sold during author week and the cost at which they will be available.

This picture will be included in the contents page, linking in with one of the coverlines on the front page (Well known authors visit the school). It is based in the library in which the authors would give readings and signings.

This picture would be included in the contents page, the picture however would also link in with my main headline about the new sixth formers.

The intention of this picture was that it would be included on my contents page. I decided that the story would be based around an exclusive interview with Geoff and that the story would be included within the 'features' section of my contents page.

My magazine included a headline on the front 'It's all about the Arts'. I found pictures of art pieces and photographed them in order to provide an idea of what the story would be about although it could include a range of things from arts performances and creations.

This picture links with a feature story that will be included on the contents page. An exclusive interview with Mrs. Parsons speaking about the subject she specifically specialises in (Philosophy and Ethics) and encouraging people to enjoy an interesting journey learning the subject.

Planning content.

In order to create a magazine that would ideally become an object of interest, the content it would include would need to be planned. This was a preliminary excercise set in which regular content and featured content of each magazine would need to be figured out. This was what I planned for my magazine.
Regular content-
A letter from Mr.Dyment congratulating last years GCSE results and welcoming new students.
Library notices
'All about the Arts'
Revision tactics
Entertainment section (Quizzes competitions etc)

Featured content-
Exclusive interview with Philosophy and Ethics teacher Mrs. Parsons
Interviews with sixth form students Katie Nicholson and Robynn Middlemiss
'Return of the Rats' Interview with Geoff
Sign up sheet for school play
Funny quotes from teachers.

Shot types

In preparation for photographing images for our front covers and contents pages, we were given a fraction of a lesson to practice taking a range of shots. We had previously noted down types of shots and what was included in the certain shot types. We were also given a task to take pictures that presented emotions; stress and friendship. These pictures were to be without people in them. Here is the result of my practice:

Shot Types

Todays lesson consisted of the group being split into pairs and taking photographs representing a variety of shot types around the school. The tasks purpose was preparation for photographing the images we will later on use in our music magazines. These shots consisted of the following;
-Extreme close up, showing eyes and nose
-Medium long shot, showing body fromt the knees upwards
-Big close up, showing full face
-Long shot, showing full body
-High angle shot, the camera looking down on a person
-Very long shot, shows the full body in a distance and it's surroundings
-Close up, shows face and sholders
-Medium close- shows face and upper body
-Two shot, shows a shot of two people
-Low angle shot, taken from a low angle, looks up at the person
-Mid shot, shows upper body
-Over the sholder shot, taken from behind a person, looking over their sholder
-Tilted frame, picture taken on a slant

Contents page- Codes and conventions

In today's lesson we analysed a range of contents pages, this helped us notice what is typical of a contents page. We also discussed codes and conventions. These included the following:

-Editors letters
-Credits for front picture
-Page number before the story line it is connected to, in a different colour
-Usually consists of two main titles; regulars and features
-Subscription and contact information to increase amount of readers
-Occasionally editors letter included
-Page numbers on pictures to anchor them to the written text of the article they are accompanied by.
-Line gap inbetween stories to ensure they do not get mixed up
-Title on front cover also displayed on contents page to reinforce the brand
-Word 'contents' in large font
-Date, issue number and website all included within contents page
-Clear and consistent font used so that contents page is easy to read
-Main image must relate to main article, this article must be about music
-Colour scheme must be consistent to ensure the colours do not clash
-Sub headlines usually in roman font as it is clear to read
-Font size for coverlines usually 11 or 12

Codes and conventions of front covers

There are certain ingredients a music magazine needs to consist of to be considered good or conventional.
-The colour scheme usually consists of simple colours, preferably three or four to ensure they do not clash.
-The colours are supposed to reinforce the brand.
-Main coverline links to main image
-All font in same style
-Top/bottom strip to give further information about what may be included in the magazine
-Barcode/Dateline & Price to show the date the magazine is published and how much it is to purchase
-A masthead created with known typography to ensure the readers become familiar with what they are reading
-Text relating to image must be close to the image it relates to.
-Plain background if possible, this does not distract attention from the main image.
-Image of band or artist included on front.
-If the image is a band, the shot is usually a long or medium shot so that the whole band can fit in the picture.
-If the image is focused solely on a single artist the shot is usually a medium close up.
-Person or persons in main image usually make direct eye contact with the camera.
-Body language displayed in the image must fit genre.
